The Villa on Hamburg’s Elbchaussee, built around 1830 for Therese Heine, the youngest daughter of the Hamburger banker, Salomon Heine, and cousin of the poet Heinrich Heine, is to be renovated and, in accordance with its original function, converted into a residential building. The historical character of the listed villa is to be largely preserved. The necessary structural changes, the conversion into three spacious residential units, and the changed urban focus of the building is met with a reduced form language and the use of contemporary design elements. The structure of the old building is largely integrated into the new plan so that the historic building fabric is largely preserved. The original steel and glass construction on the front of the building to the west is reinterpreted in the form of a glass extension. It expands the living area of one apartment, while at the same time serving as a spacious terrace for the apartment above it. The historical centrepiece of the building, the staircase with its wooden staircase, marble flooring and wall pilasters, is completely preserved and extensively restored. The entire technical equipment of the building is restored to today’s standard. From the start, all plans have been coordinated with the office for conservation and listed buildings.
