New administration building in Wandsbek Hamburg

2nd prize in building design competition with eight participants. A new office and administration building is to be built for the Wandsbek district council on the so-called “Wandsbeker Zollinsel” between Rüterstrasse and Wandsbeker Zollstrasse. The building will bring together and house the council’s administrative and organizational units, currently distributed across different locations. Together with Ferrier Marchetti’s Paris office and G2 Landschaft in Hamburg, a sustainable design concept was developed. The large building volume, with a floor space of more than 15,000 m2, is broken up by targeted recesses and projections, echoing the scale and fragmented structure of the surrounding buildings. This structure gives the building the appearance of a unified whole from the north and south, while at the same time creating a series of different “pavilions”. The connecting areas are designed as small courtyard terraces – in the south with a green screen providing a vertical garden – which rise above the base level. The east and west sides of the building are dominated by a greenhouse and conservatory, providing an urban green space for users. The main entrance in the west is preceded by an urban square area to welcome visitors. Marked by large recesses, the building opens up here, giving it its unmistakable public character. The surrounding arcades further emphasize the affiliation to the city and access for the public. In the interior of the building, an appropriate sense of spaciousness is created through the two-storey entrance hall. The “island structure” inside enables visitors to find their way around, guides employees quickly to their different work areas and allows the floor plans to be organized flexibly. While reinforced concrete is planned for the ground and first floors due to the size of the areas, a wooden construction is planned for the upper floors, helping to reduce the carbon footprint of the building. The facade features ceramic cladding, a durable and long-lasting material, and as a supplementary regenerative energy source, photovoltaics are installed on the planted roof surfaces. The fenced areas are also planted, creating hanging gardens for the courtyards. Rainwater is temporarily stored in drains in the outdoor areas. Air conditioning systems are equipped with a highly efficient heat recovery system. External solar protection reduces direct sunlight in the rooms, which is directed instead to the ceiling of the office space through slats arranged at different angular positions, allowing for artificial light to be largely dispensed with. The glass structures and planted corridors are illuminated at night and create a green, ecological city gate.
