Design workshop with 6 participating. Situated directly at the water and within walking distance of the town centre of Bergedorf, Hamburg, the new steelworks district (Stuhlrohrquartier) forms a new urban area in an inner-city location. In addition to various forms of housing, the 5.5 acre site will include retail units, offices and daycare centres, as well as private and public recreational spaces. The design concept for the area envisages not only small mixed-use structures, but also the inclusion of large existing buildings such as the historic steelworks halls and house. Influenced by the historic, industrial-style architecture of these buildings, DFZ has employed some of the typical features of this era and transformed them in a contemporary manner for the development of two differently designed loft houses. The colours and formats of the clinker bricks correspond with the surrounding listed industrial buildings, and, in accordance with the design brief, the typology of the atrium building is adopted in the design, creating a distinctive location in the ensemble. Simultaneously, the circumferential nature of the circulation reduces the number of staircases and enables a stacking of structures with different usage. Flexible floor plan typologies with a modular structure can be individually adapted to specific needs in the further planning and implementation process. Depending on requirements, apartment sizes can vary, with rooms being combined or exchanged as necessary. The facade grid of the buildings is correspondingly clear and stringent, creating a calm appearance and contrasting with the surrounding small-scale mixed-use structures.
