Stuhlrohrquartier Hamburg

Urban planning design project for 5 iconic buildings involving 10 participants. Located directly at the water and within walking distance to the town centre of Bergedorf, Hamburg, the Stuhlrohrquartier (Steelworks district) forms a new urban district in an inner-city location. In addition to various forms of housing, the plans for the 5.5 acre site include retail units, offices and daycare centres, as well as private and public recreational spaces. As part of the design project, five iconic corner buildings are to be developed, offering various housing types ranging from social housing to owner-occupied apartments. Each participant was assigned the design of a corner building on two construction sites, with the successful candidates being commissioned to develop further residential buildings in the area based on their winning design. The building site 1.9, developed by DFZ Architects, forms the Weidenbaumsallee entrance to the district at the north side. The design for the corner building, widely visible from the south, allows for a shift in the position and height of the seven-storey building, subtly distinguishing it from the neighbouring buildings and creating a suitable impact. The recessed facade of the six-storey neighbouring building on the south side allows the corner structure to blend naturally with the surrounding buildings, whilst also strengthening its landmark quality. Located opposite the listed steel pipe factory (Stuhlrohrhalle), the historical context of building site 2.5 gives it an important role, which is reflected in its appearance. Borrowing from industrial architecture, DFZ adopts the model of a loft building, transforming the typical features in a contemporary manner. Slight setbacks as well as the use of two surface materials in the huge facade elements create differentiations. The result is a confidently placed structure with a perforated facade, consisting of generous double and triple casement window elements as well as playfully arranged balconies.
