Special mention in open, two-phase competition. The purpose of the competition is the expansion of the school’s location in Sandinostrasse in Berlin Lichtenberg. The school site, with an area of approx. 35,750 m2, includes a primary school with four parallel classes, an integrated secondary school with 6 parallel classes and four parallel classes in the upper levels, as well as two sports halls. As part of the restructuring and expansion plans, the two sports halls and a mobile classroom are to be demolished and replaced with new buildings due to structural and energy deficits. Separate, independently operated grounds are to be created for both the primary school and the secondary school. To ensure the continuation of school operations during the entire construction period, three construction phases are planned. In the first phase, the extension building with specialist rooms will be placed at the southern end of the site, creating a spatially defined school campus. In the second and third construction phases dismantling and construction of two independent sports halls for each school is planned. These buildings clearly define the structure and boundaries of each of the respective school sites, and form the future “heart” of each school campus. In the style of the surrounding buildings, the new buildings are planned as modular constructions. The aesthetic of the new buildings follows the construction principle: simple and compact structures form a modular system, also reflected in the facades. Behind these, functional areas characterize the horizontal and vertical proportions of the prefabricated reinforced concrete parts as well as the variations in depth. The distinguished wood panelling references the colour palette of the respective main buildings. While the recreation and sports areas are located between the buildings, the entrance opens onto Sandinostraße, forming a distinct location. The design was created in collaboration with Atelier Loidl landscape architects.
