Maihak Premises Hamburg

On the former factory premises of the company Maihak in Hamburg-Winterhude, a mixed-use development with office, retail space and apartments is constructed in three phases. The ‘opening-up’ of the former factory grounds was the central focus for the conversion. The dominant size of the production hall, the tight spacing of the buildings as well as the roadways in the centre of the grounds challenged a contemporary conversion of the premises. After pulling down carefully selected areas, the former production site is now divided up by three publicly accessible courtyards, opening up the grounds and integrating them into the public area. The administrative buildings are completed with setback top floors featuring spacious apartments and roof terraces. The new architectural elements are deliberately emphasized and designed to complement the existing architecture, thus preserving the fabric of the old buildings.
