The aim of the building project is to restructure an area in Lessingstrasse in Hamburg’s Hohenfelde district. It involves the refurbishment and conversion of a listed petrol station from the 1950’s and the construction of a new three-storey residential building with a staggered storey. Following close consultation with the historic buildings authorities, the existing plots will be joined together before being divided into three new plots. Following an in-depth restoration analysis, the petrol station, with its cantilevered canopy supported by a round column, will be renovated in accordance with historic building regulations and converted into a “studio loft” for living and working. An important focus of the project is the complete preservation of the outer appearance, as well as bringing the 1950’s characteristics to the fore. The non-listed building stock and the workshops at the rear of the property will be demolished and replaced by a new three-storey residential building. The structure contains 12 condominiums and continues the building line of the neighboring houses. It is positioned in the second row between the petrol station and the existing shed. The predominantly three-storey nature of the surrounding structures is continued and supplemented by a staggered storey with spacious roof terraces. The cubature of the new building opens up towards the petrol station and creates desired visual relationships. Out of respect for the listed historic building in the foreground, a restrained facade design has been adopted for the rear building. The use of predominantly plaster for the surroundings buildings provides the base for the materiality and is combined with facade panels between the windows. On the garden side, the existing shed structures are integrated into the open space concept by GHP Landschaft, creating a balanced overall structure of old and new.
