Together with Schmidt Hammer Lassen Architects (Copenhagen), we have won the two-stage architectural competition for the Bahrenfeld Learning Centre – organised by the State Agency for Property Management and Land Assets (LIG). The Learning Centre is being created through the redevelopment of the existing buildings on Albert-Einstein-Ring and will become a central hub for learning and life for around 5,500 students at the University of Hamburg in Science City Hamburg Bahrenfeld. Rather than filling the spaces between the three existing buildings, petal-like, staggered wooden levels connect the structures, creating a multi-layered learning landscape – vertically dense and collaborative, horizontally calm and focused. The central atrium connects all levels both visually and spatially. The jury commended the high spatial quality, the clear design concept and the sensitive approach to the existing buildings. Circular economy principles, timber structures and passive climate strategies make the building a lasting asset – ready to evolve alongside its community. A place for lifelong learning. A place for everyone.
