Elementary school “Am Schleemer Park” Hamburg

Negotiated procedure with solution sketch. The elementary school “Am Schleemer Park” in the east of Hamburg consists of several individual buildings, built between 1966 and 1977, as well as two sports halls. Due to their poor condition, all of the existing buildings, with the exception of the sports halls, are to be demolished and replaced by a new building for a primary school with five classes per year. In addition to classrooms, the new building will house a gym hall, sports and exercise areas, a canteen and ‘vitality’ kitchen, as well as a competence centre for immigrants. DFZ’s concept solution for the new school building envisages an independent structure that, thanks to its clear design, materiality and color scheme, creates a new centre of attraction in the heterogeneous surroundings. The planned parallel roof, the warm beige tone of the brick and the contrasting color of the window profiles lend the location a sense of liveliness. The simple approach of shifting volumes against each other creates various open spaces with diverse characters that respond to the different needs of the pupils. A spacious forecourt provides access to the main entrance area, which acts as an interface between the school building and the schoolyard. The school’s pedagogical guiding principle of “learning through movement” is incorporated as a central component of the design and made spatially tangible by linking indoor and outdoor spaces and combining teaching areas, movement areas and quiet zones. Teaching at the future school is organized in a total of four year group clusters. At the centre of each cluster is the “marketplace”, which is made up of communal and movement areas as well as open speciality areas. The planning takes ecological and economic sustainability aspects into account through the use of durable and low-maintenance materials, efficient use of the planned areas and photovoltaics on the roofs.
