Emils Quartier Hamburg

2nd prize in structural and open space workshop process with ten participants. As part of a structural and open space planning workshop process, the urban distribution area on Von-Sauer-Strasse in Hamburg-Bahrenfeld is to be reorganized, creating attractive living space and a future-oriented, mixed-use urban district. With individual differentiated structures combining to form an overall ensemble, the design references the surrounding buildings. With their protrusions and recesses, the overlapping and interlocking structures fit into the approximately 12,900 square metre plot, ensuring the preservation of the tree population and creating a relaxed street scene with retail spaces on the ground floor. The staggered heights of the buildings reference those in the neighbourhood and at the same time provide the residents of the Martha Foundation with an easily accessible roof garden. The distribution and mix of different functions and apartment types contributes to the mixed living theme and creates a lively area. The same goes for the intensely green inner courtyard: like a “green lung”, it creates private and public open spaces for residents, such as play and leisure areas, as well as urban garden areas. The dynamic roof landscape, an extensive green area equipped with photovoltaic systems, makes an important contribution to the energy balance of the building. The design was created together with landscape architects Treibhaus Landschaftsarchitektur.
