Baufeld 84 HafenCity Hamburg

The result of a building design competition forms the basis for the perimeter block development in the eastern part of HafenCity Hamburg. The 24-hectare Neuhavn quarter is located in a double waterfront location on the Elbe, where different types of apartments, offices and restaurants will be built. The urban environment is characterized by the waterfront location and the proximity to Liselotte-von-Rantzau Park and the HafenCity University and Elbbrücken subway stations. The construction site 84a realized by DFZ consists of a total of three building sections: The seven-storey Building 1 is situated orthogonally between the harbor basin and the railroad line. In addition to 32 privately financed apartments, there are two water-facing townhouses and the premises of the Loki Schmidt Foundation. The latter houses offices, a gallery level and an exhibition space on the terp floor with access to the waterfront promenade. In addition to the 62 subsidized apartments, the buildings aligned parallel to Versmannstrasse (buildings 2+3) also contain office space and a café on the first floor.The external appearance of the ensemble is characterized by a brick slip façade in a special format. The façade of building 1 has a narrow brick slips in vertical format, which emphasizes the vertical orientation of the building. A square brick slip format is used for houses 2+3, which is accentuated on the first floor and around the window areas by projecting and recessed rows of bricks. In combination with the dark metal components and the glass surfaces, the light-colored clinker brick clearly comes to the fore. The overall concept combines clear architectural stringency with a differentiated choice of materials and façade design, which makes the different uses readable and characterizes the appearance. Buildings 2+3 are being realized in accordance with the IFB’s funding guidelines. The project has been awarded the HafenCity Ecolabel Platinum.
