Baufeld 84 HafenCity Hamburg

The Baakenhafen Quarter, with an area of 24 hectares,  is characterized by its position on the Elbe with water on both sides. Due to the Liselotte-von-Rantzau-Park in the west and the proximity to the subway station HafenCity University, the construction site enjoys a special location between the Baakenhafen and Elbbrücken districts. The DFZ design includes solutions for townhouses, the Loki-Schmidt Foundation and subsidized housing on Versemannstrasse (building site 84a). The two-storey townhouses are built towards the water and, in classic terrace house style, each have their own entrance onto the square. In addition to private gardens facing onto the courtyard (lower townhouses) and roof terraces (upper townhouses), each residential unit enjoys green areas on all facade sides.  These are created through plant basins integrated into the facade, each designed differently depending on its location. The layout and size of the townhouses can be individually designed by combining different basic elements. Facing towards the water, the structure creates sculptural incisions, referencing the rough harbour typology, while uniform window openings structure the facade with restraint. The subsidized housing construction, on the other hand, receives “standard windows”, which can be opened outwards and give the street facades a lively character. The location and the formation of the light openings, as well as the floorplan design, respond to the respective influences of the surrounding noise sources. The main materials consist of exposed concrete, wood and metal with a bronze effect. The exposed concrete elements change in colour through varying shades of beige and display different textural qualities, designed to reflect the diversity of the residents to the outside.
