Rethinking the heart of Altona: DFZ Architekten, in collaboration with Snøhetta (Oslo), took part in the collaborative workshop ‘Altona Station Area – Design Ideas for the Centre’. Our design combines mobility and urban life in a contemporary way: three precisely positioned buildings frame a new square that defines the area’s identity. The bus station will be partially relocated underground, creating a spacious public space above ground that puts people at the centre. A continuous red brick paving provides orientation, whilst embedded green oases invite people to linger. Striking arches echo the architectural language of the historic railway station, which was demolished in the 1970s – continuity meets a new, distinctive identity.
