House of World Cultures Berlin

1st prize in limited competition with five participants for the restoration and modernisation of the “Haus der Kulturen der Welt” (House of World Cultures) in Berlin. Central to the design concept is the requirement to create an ideal environment for the production and presentation of aesthetic, scientific and social strategies whilst simultaneously respecting the architectural heritage and history of the place. The running of events and their different forms, as well as the lack of a predefined format for cultural production requires a high degree of flexibility within the existing listed structure. The concept is based on the updating and further development of the characteristics of the building, in particular the openness, smooth transitions and the strategic layout of the space. The theme ‘light’ as a non-material design tool thus plays an important role in responding to the demand for interventions and solutions that are unique, aesthetically appealing and functional.
