Elbchaussee 81 Hamburg

A 1920’s villa in the Elbchaussee, Ottensen is rebuilt and extended with a two-story building on the south side. A high priority for the reconstruction is the preservation of the intricately designed front facade, which lends a particular sophistication to the overall residential development. The facade is reconstructed using the original brick and adheres to historical planning guidelines. The prestigious entrance area is characterized by a single-storey porch and large arched doorway and is rebuilt in its original form. The new building located to the south is built in the form of a cube and distinguished by various recesses in its structure. These create an impression of varying depths and refine the shape of the building. The materials used for the cube structure recall the brick facade of the villa, interpreting its structured 1920’s style in a modern way. Clad in architectural ceramics, the new structure has a unique, modern architectural style. The lightweight glass structure attaching the two buildings contains an entrance area and also creates a visual separation of the two buildings. The generous floor to ceiling windows to the south ensure maximum exposure to daylight, as well as unobstructed views of the Elbe.
