Christians-Quater Hamburg

Invited design competition with six participants. A 1960’s unused department store complex in Hamburg-Altona is converted. The most important design element is the new facade. Differently formatted wall panels are arranged in a three-dimensional facade landscape, reflecting and newly interpreting the fragmented nature of the surrounding buildings. Pilaster strips of natural stone positioned at varying distances create an interplay of solidity and transparency according to the use of the space behind – either commercial or parking. The existing residential floors on the upper levels receive a new, partly plant-covered metal facade.
