Living in Mohnhof Hamburg-Bergedorf

1st prize for invited urban design competition with in-depth architectural focus involving six participants. In an attractive location minutes from Bergedorf’s historic city centre and shopping area, 80 residential units are to be constructed in the first phase on a site formerly used mostly for retail space. In addition, a fundamental urban design concept for the western part of the proposed area has been devised and is to be completed in a later phase. The architectural design allows for the original character of the existing urban structure to be maintained and completed using modern methods. As a logical continuation of the urban perimeter block structure, the new buildings are arranged on the site so that that they blend harmoniously and naturally into the existing structure. A closed construction is created on the Bergedorfer Straße side in order to protect the inner courtyard from exposure to traffic noise. By creating a common building typology for the buildings located on the inner and outer perimeter block, the new residential quarter will be presented to the outside while its sophisticated and clearly proportioned buildings ensure that it blends harmoniously with the existing surrounding area. The variation in building heights produces a distinguished silhouette. The brick facade material in various colours and the varied staggering of the structure with projections and recesses strengthen the identity of the new quarter.
