Administration Building University of Applied Sciences Aachen

Limited competition with 30 participants. The new administration building complements the existing 1960’s structure, providing a new highlight with its contemporary architectural language. While the character of the site is preserved, the new high-rise building simultaneously places new emphasis on the urban space. The seven-storey cantilevered block rises up from a base, breathing new life into the existing forecourt. The interplay of large, closed and transparent facade areas characterizes the building’s appearance. On the busy street side, the windows are purposely designed as narrow slits. The glass facades, placed behind precast concrete elements in order to provide sun protection, appear either closed or transparent, depending on the angle from which they are viewed. With its light colouring the new building provides a clear but respectful contrast to the existing dark buildings.
