Halbinsel Kesselstraße Düsseldorf

As part of the on-going development of Düsseldorf’s Medienhafen district, Kesselstraße, a peninsula area of the harbour and an important urban development area in the city, is undergoing transformation. Construction projects such as Pier One, trivago’s new headquarters and the Speditionsstrasse West district are changing the structure of the peninsula and creating a new urban environment. The main focus of this two-phase competition is the development of an overall concept for the on-going development of the area including solutions for future use, the design of open spaces, the development of infrastructure and the urban integration of the neighbouring construction projects. Currently the peninsula’s bank already offers rich diversity, with its green slope and old trees contrasting with the hard industrial character of the harbour edge. The aim of DFZ Architects’ design is to create qualitative open spaces with a strong connection to the water while at the same time developing the waterfront as an authentic open public space. The green bank of the river is considered a special attraction in the former industrial port and is to be developed into a spacious park, providing green space at the centre of the Medienhafen. The park forms a natural break between the Kesselstraße district and Pier One whilst preserving the visual relationship between the media and industrial harbour. Creating an exciting contrast to the park, the promenade is the connection between the tip and the harbour end of the peninsula. Past the open space, the tip of Kesselstraße is redefined and emphasized with a special solitaire. At the same time, the head of Harbour Basin B gains in significance and is emphasized as a prelude to the harbour district. In between, the district stretches out and interlocks with the Uferpark and Kaipromenade through openings, courtyards and arcades. The urban area is composed of a new combination of previously existing building elements, providing a reference to the media and industrial ports. Following an analysis of the spatial structure of the neighbouring “islands”, DFZ Architekten developed a new combination of the old building components, which are added or combined with other building typologies to form courtyard structures. “Market halls” and high buildings form distinctive landmarks within the district. The design was created in collaboration with Atelier Loidl from Berlin.
