Greencity Hohenfelde Hamburg

Invited urban design competition with one part for building design and one for landscape design with seven participants. The construction site is located on the busy street, “Mühlendamm”, and is characterized by a diverse mix of surrounding buildings. A new park area is created to the west of the site as the “Grüne Mitte Hohenfelde” (green centre in Hohenfelde), while to the east a compact area of residential buildings form the “Green City Hohenfelde”. The green character of the place is preserved. A long rectangular block is positioned along the roadside, ensuring a contemporary “continuation” and enhancement of the existing urban structure. At right angles to the street building, three structures emerge like “branches” growing into the park area. A smooth transition between the residential and park area is created. The strategic use of bends and staggered heights accentuate the diverse yet consistent structure of the building complex. The mix of rented and owned flats offers a family-friendly, diverse combination of housing types.
