Residential Area Gaußstraße Hamburg

Result of an invited competition with five participants. In accordance with the KFW guidelines 70 and 55 respectively, a housing area is developed in Hamburg-Ottensen with 202 residential units. The project has been commissioned by Hamburg’s Wohnungsbaukreditanstalt. As well as apartments with an open-plan design concept, maisonette apartments and townhouses are planned. The overlapping structures are organised in the form of a trapezoid around a courtyard. The facade is based on a simple grid, which, through the addition of parapet elements and shear walls allows for various possibilities for the opening or closing of the facade.   The materiality and sense of depth created by the brick facade reflect the neighbouring brick buildings of the 1920’s by Gustav Oelsners. The L-shaped metal-clad penthouse forms a refreshing contrast to the ‘klinker’ facades.
