As part of an invited urban and architectural design competition, a new building is designed in Barmbek/Hamburg with about 100 residential units. The modern apartment block surrounds a rectangular courtyard. Typical characteristics from the nearby residential complexes, such as the courtyard with gateway, are referenced and newly interpreted within the design, allowing the building to blend naturally into the environment. By maximizing the depth of the construction, the large volume is successfully contained in moderate proportions. The brick facade, typical for this area, is simple and clearly structured.
